Our approach is tailored to your individual head of hair. It incorporates several different techniques and is based on the natural tendencies of hair and your unique pattern of hair growth. While each of our stylists has their own unique take on the details of the process, they all have the same general approach.
Many salons/brands and hairdressers will tell you that ONLY dry-cutting or ONLY wet-cutting are the only way you should cut curly hair. (These ideas were popularized by Deva and Ouidad, and are continued by other “branded” haircuts.) The truth is that there are benefits to both approaches, and on most types of hair and hairstyles, we incorporate both, depending on your hair and hairstyle.
Pros of wet-cutting:
When you remove weight from a haircut, the amount of spring and coil is affected. If you only are dry-cutting, it can lay in a very different, non-optimal way the next time it is styled.
When you “rough in” the general shape of the haircut while it is wet, it tends to give you a better flow to the shape. You can then “fine-tune” it while it’s dry.
Wet-cutting gives a consistent end to the curls, not shattered like dry-cutting can give. This results in a more consistent shape and less frizz.
Wet-cutting gives your curls the ability to not always fall the exact same way and still look good.
It is easier to cut off a very small amount of hair, if desired, by wet-cutting.
Pros of dry-cutting:
With dry-cutting, it’s easier to account for major textural and coil differences in the hair.
With certain dry techniques, you can immediately see the result. This is especially important with type 4 (very curly) hair, and when “finishing” the haircut.
At Curly Hair Austin, we utilize both wet and dry cutting techniques, giving our clients the benefits of both. If you have strong feelings that only one or the other is the “only” way to have your hair cut, we might not be the best fit for you.
When you see pictures of people with rezo, deva, ouidad, etc. cuts, you should also keep in mind that a lot of their hair was diffused for an hour or more. We think hair should be easier than that. We dry your hair under a hood dryer to simulate you air-drying it at home. This allows us to see any idiosyncrasies of your hair we need to address that a diffuser would hide, and lets our customers see what they can do on their own at home.
We have many hundreds of clients that have stuck with us for years because we make it easy for them to forget about their hair: they know it will look good, so they can focus on the more important things in life. We would love for you to be one of them!
